Chapter 18: Chapter 18 Under the Warehouse Roof — Rebellious Symphony

Updated 09/09/2026 7 min read

A week before the final round, a heavy rain suddenly fell on the city right in the middle of Linh and Minh's evening practice session.

The sound of rain falling on the old corrugated iron roof of the warehouse, filtering through a few small gaps, dripping onto the patchy tile floor. Linh quickly pulled the violin out of the leak's reach, while Minh quickly covered the computer system with an old tarp that was still in the corner of the room.

"Looks like we have to stop earlier than expected tonight," Minh said, looking out the small window, the rain was still pouring with no signs of stopping. "This rain will probably last a long time."

"Probably," Linh replied, sitting down on the familiar plastic chair, looking out the foggy window. "Maybe we should wait until the rain stops and then go home."

They sat next to each other in silence for a while, with only the steady sound of the rain falling and the gentle hum of the laptop's cooling fan as the only background sounds in the small room.

"You know," Minh spoke up, breaking the silence, his voice unusually warm, "I've finished the song I promised to write for you."

Linh's heart skipped a beat. "Really? When will I hear?"

"Now, if you want," Minh said, his hands shaking slightly as he opened the laptop, a rare expression of anxiety that Linh had never seen in him before, even when facing Kiên or his father.

He pressed play. The first sound that rang out was a violin sampled from their own rehearsals, blended with a gentle piano melody, and underneath, a layer of fuzzy synth, as warm as candlelight. The song has no lyrics, but each note seems to tell a story: about a girl who always tries to be perfect, about the loneliness hidden behind a strong exterior, and about something tender that gradually blossoms between seemingly opposing notes.

Linh listened to the end of the song, tears rolling down her cheeks without her even realizing it. "Minh... this song is so beautiful."

"I named it 'Linh'," Minh said softly, his voice a bit embarrassed. "Because that's exactly what I feel when I think of you. Perfect on the outside, but underneath is a soul stronger, truer, and... more beautiful than anything I've ever known."

Linh turned to look at him, the distance between the two of them closer than ever in the dim light of the storage room. "Minh, I need to tell you something."

"Say it," Minh replied, his voice soft, his eyes never leaving her.

"I think..." Linh hesitated, her heart pounding. "I think I've liked you for a long time, maybe since the first night you taught me to let my emotions guide my hands while playing the piano. Not the usual gratitude for helping me arrange music. But... genuine liking."

Minh was silent for a moment, then smiled softly, the warmest smile Linh had ever seen on his face. "Then we're similar. I've also liked you for a long time, perhaps since the night you played the Sonata again with real emotion, instead of the initial cold perfection. At that time, I realized that, behind the stern appearance of class president, you had an incredibly sensitive and intense soul."

"Then why didn't you say anything?" Linh asked, her voice trembling.

"Because I'm scared," Minh confessed, his voice rare with sincerity. "I'm afraid if I tell, things will become more complicated between us, right when we need to focus the most on the competition. And I'm also afraid, with all the secrets I'm carrying, I don't deserve someone as wonderful as you."

"Don't say that," Linh grabbed his hand and squeezed it tightly. "You're worth it, Minh. You're talented, sincere, and have taught me more about life than anyone else. The secrets you carry don't define you. It's how you deal with them that matters."

Minh looked at her, his eyes filled with an emotion that he was no longer trying to hide. Slowly, he raised his hand and gently pushed a strand of hair wet from the rain from her face.

"Linh," he whispered, his voice hoarse with emotion. "Can I kiss you?"

Linh's heart was pounding, she nodded slightly, speechless.

Minh leaned down, slowly, as if afraid of breaking this fragile moment, placing a gentle kiss on her lips. Outside, the sound of rain was still falling steadily, mingling with the beating hearts of both young people in the small storage room, where everything between them had begun one fateful evening more than two months ago.

When the kiss ended, they both smiled, shy but filled with happiness in their eyes.

"So," Minh said, his voice still shaking a bit, "officially, from now on, we are no longer 'contractual partners'."

"No," Linh smiled, resting her head on his shoulder, an intimate gesture that she had never dared to imagine doing before. "But I think, we should keep this a secret for a while longer. At least until the finals are over, and my dad is less stressed."

"Agreed," Minh nodded, wrapping his arms around her gently, enjoying the rare warmth amid the cold rain outside. "Another secret to keep, but this time, at least, it's a secret we both choose to keep, not one alone."

They sat there for a long time, listening to the sound of rain falling, enjoying the rare moment of peace amidst all the storms that had and would continue to come. Outside, the scholarship storm, the family storm, and even the storm from Minh's past were still waiting. But right now, in a small storage room under a rainwater-dripping corrugated iron roof, two young hearts had found each other, as completely and sincerely as possible.

That night, when the rain stopped and Linh was about to leave, Minh held her hand one more time before saying goodbye at the warehouse gate. “Thank you,” he said, his voice filled with sincerity, “for catching me red-handed in this storage room, two months ago.”

Linh laughed, recalling that fateful moment. "Thank you for letting me catch you red-handed," she replied, then turned around and walked away into the night that had stopped raining, her heart filled with a happiness that she had never dared to dream of, amid the countless challenges that still lay ahead.

The next morning, Linh woke up with an unusual feeling of lightness, as if the whole world around her had just taken on a brighter color. She stood in front of the mirror, suddenly smiling to herself as she remembered last night's kiss, to the point that Bảo Châu, when he met her at the school gate, immediately burst into teasing laughter.

"You look like you just won the lottery," Bảo Châu said, holding his best friend's arm and walking into the school yard. "Did anything happen last night that I need to know about?"

Linh blushed, unable to hide her smile. "Maybe... there's a little matter."

"Tell now!" Bảo Châu pulled you into a corner of the empty hallway, his eyes shining with curiosity.

Linh recounted the whole story of last night — the song Minh wrote for her, the confessions, and the kiss under the shed roof in the rain. Bảo Châu heard everything, hugged his friend, and shouted excitedly even though he tried to suppress his voice to not attract the attention of others.

"I know! I told you, right?" Châu smiled from ear to ear. "So you two are officially a couple now?"

"Yes," Linh nodded, embarrassed but happy. "But we decided to keep this a secret for a while longer, at least until the finals are over. My dad is still keeping a very sharp eye after the ultimatum the other day."

"I understand," Bảo Châu nodded, his expression serious again. "This secret is safe with me, you know. But Linh," she held your hand, her eyes warm, "I'm really happy for you. After so many years of only learning and playing the piano according to the rules, you've finally found something that truly belongs to you, not because anyone else expected it."

Linh squeezed her best friend's hand, her heart filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Châu, for always being by my side in everything."

During recess that day, when they happened to meet Minh in the hallway, the two only exchanged a brief look, a secret smile that only the two of them could understand the meaning behind, before each of them went their own way, continuing their normal cover in front of the curious eyes of surrounding classmates. But in both of their hearts, a new chapter, warmer and more honest than ever, has officially been written, along with the notes they are still diligently perfecting for the upcoming finale.

That afternoon, in warehouse number 4, Minh had prepared a small surprise: he hung a tiny, battery-powered LED strip along the window frame that only had cold fluorescent light. "It's no big deal," he said, a little embarrassed when he saw Linh walk in admiringly. "Just want this place to look a little warmer, from today."

"Very beautiful," Linh said, sitting down in her familiar chair, her eyes sparkling under the small light. "This dusty storage room now looks much more like a place worth remembering."

"It's always a memorable place," Minh replied, sitting down next to her, gently putting his arm around her shoulder in a natural way like never before. "Since the first day you caught me here, this place has become an indispensable part of my life."

They began the practice session that night with a new comfort, no longer the timid distance, but the natural closeness of two people who had just found each other. Violin and electronic music blend under warm small LED lights, as a living proof that two seemingly completely opposite worlds can coexist, harmonize and shine together.
