Chapter 29: Chapter 29 Finale at the Royal Theater — Rebellious Symphony

Updated 09/09/2026 8 min read

The Royal City Theater glowed with lights on Saturday night, welcoming hundreds of spectators to watch the final night of the National Youth Creative Arts Competition. The marble main lobby, sparkling crystal chandeliers, and a giant stage backdrop displaying the words "Breaking the Limit" in bright neon light.

Linh stood backstage, holding her mother's violin, her heart beating faster than ever before. Through the gap in the red velvet curtain, she could see that the audience seats were almost full, and in the front row, the seven judges were sitting solemnly, including Professor Laurent from the Juilliard Academy of Arts, their calm faces revealing no emotions.

"Are you okay?" Minh asked, standing next to her with a laptop already connected to the theater's sound system, his voice unable to hide the tension.

"I'm shaking so much," Linh admitted, her hands feeling a bit cold.

"It's normal," Minh grabbed her hand and squeezed it gently. "Look." He pointed towards the audience seats near the stage, where Ms. Đặng Lan Anh, Mr. Phương Đình Đạt, Professor Trần Quang Vũ and Ms. Đoàn Ngọc Diễm were sitting next to each other, and a little further away, Bảo Châu was waving enthusiastically, next to Đỗ Xuân Kiên, who was determined to come see "to witness with his own eyes the masterpiece of the boy I used to teach".

"All the most important people are here," Minh said, his eyes warm. "We're not alone, no matter what happens tonight."

At that moment, Bảo Châu, who was standing near the backstage area as technical support for the organizers, rushed over with a worried look on his face. "Linh, Minh, there's something going on. I just heard that a reporter from a news site that published a scandal about the two of you is in the auditorium, carrying a hidden camera. She plans to record evidence to confirm Z's identity tonight, and write an article to expose it right after the competition ends."

Linh's heart tightened. "Right now?"

"We don't have time to avoid anymore," Minh said, his voice suddenly becoming unusually calm, as if an important decision had just flashed in his mind. "Maybe, it's time we stop letting others control our stories."

Linh's name was announced. She stepped onto the stage under bright lights, wearing a simple but elegant white dress, her mother's old violin in her hand. The auditorium was silent for a moment before a round of welcoming applause rang out.

She bowed, placed the violin on her shoulder, and closed her eyes for a moment. In her mind, everything she had experienced appeared: the fateful evening of meeting Minh in the storage room, the nights of hard practice, the painful argument, the separation, and now, the hopeful reunion.

The first note rang out, clear and simple, without any electronic effects, just the purest sound of the violin, exactly the same sound that Mr. Hoàng had heard during the first rehearsal many months ago. But this time, every note is filled with vivid, heart-wrenching emotions.

Gradually, from the backstage, layers of Minh's electronic sound crept in, gently like the first breath of spring, then gradually stronger with each piece of music. The auditorium seemed to hold its breath, completely immersed in the strange symphony, both classic and modern, both gentle and fierce.

At the most important climax - where the sound needs to explode with a full array of electronic effects - suddenly, the entire speaker system emitted a shrill hiss, then went completely silent. An unexpected technical problem, perhaps due to overloading the theater's sound system.

The auditorium was buzzing. Linh stood frozen on stage, her heart pounding. This was the most important moment, and every layer of electronic sound she needed was gone.

But instead of panicking, Linh remembered the first lesson Minh taught her: let emotions lead, not technical perfection. She closed her eyes and continued to play the piano, pouring all of her pent-up emotions over the past several months into each note, letting the rustic violin sound carry the climax with its pure emotional power.

From backstage, Minh frantically checked the system and realized the problem was in the main audio amplifier. In the decisive moment, instead of just standing there helplessly, he grabbed a small backup portable speaker that he always brought with him just in case, quickly plugged it into his laptop, and then walked straight to the stage, in front of the entire auditorium.

Murmurs arose everywhere when an unfamiliar student appeared on stage, holding a small speaker and laptop, standing next to Linh. But no one had time to react anymore, because as soon as he reconnected the system, the electronic sound exploded again, blending perfectly with the violin sound at the peak of Linh's emotions.

The entire auditorium seemed to burst into an earthquake of sound, the passionate violin mixed with powerful, intense synth layers, pushing the emotions of the entire audience to the climax. Many people in the audience stood up, unable to hide their shock at the spectacular performance.

When the music gradually calmed down towards the end, leaving only the lone violin, humming the last peaceful notes, Minh stood next to Linh, both looking at each other in the spotlight.

"This is Trần Nhật Minh," Linh said loudly into the microphone attached to her body, her voice trembling but full of pride, without any hesitation. "The person who created the mix you just heard with me. And outside of this class of ordinary students, everyone has probably heard his other name: Z."

A dead silence covered the auditorium for a split second, before the whispers exploded violently, then quickly turned into a thunderous applause, mixed with the excited cheers of the young audience who had just realized their mysterious musical idol was standing right before their eyes.

Professor Laurent, an older man who had remained calm throughout the evening, stood up from the jury chair, a rare action that caught the entire audience's attention.

"Please allow me to say a few words," he said, his Vietnamese accent a bit foreign but clear. "When the organizers proposed this year's theme 'Breaking Limits', we were looking for something truly rare: young artists who dare to step out of the safe framework, take risks to create a truly artistic voice of their own. I have to admit, thirty years ago, when I was a young pianist, I tried to incorporate jazz into classical concertos, and was mercilessly criticized by the entire mainstream music criticism community. For many years, I wondered whether that decision was wrong."

He stopped, looked straight at Linh and Minh, his eyes filled with emotion. "Tonight, when I witnessed these two young people, not only overcoming an unexpected technical problem with strong courage and preparation, but also courageously standing out and publicly revealing the truth about themselves right in the middle of the stage, I realized that this is exactly the "breaking the limit" spirit that we are always looking for. Not only in music, but in the way they dare to live true to themselves," He turned to the other judges, exchanged briefly, and then announced. "On behalf of the jury, and as the admission representative of the Juilliard Academy of Arts, I would like to announce that Phương Linh is the winner of a full scholarship this year."

The applause exploded more intensely than ever. Linh stood there, tears rolling down her cheeks, unable to believe what she had just heard. She turned to Minh, the two clasped each other's hands, speechless at the burst of happiness.

From the audience, Ms. Lan Anh burst into tears of happiness. Mr. Đạt stood up and clapped nonstop, his eyes filled with pride that he had never shown his daughter in this way before. Professor Trần Quang Vũ and Mrs. Ngọc Diễm also stood up and clapped as if to make up for all the years they had never recognized their son's true talent.

That night, under the bright lights of the Royal City Theater, the rebellious symphony of two young souls finally sounded to its fullest, with no more hiding, no more fear, only music, love, and a worthy victory built from the talent and relentless perseverance of both of them.

In a corner of the auditorium, the female reporter who wrote a scandal about "a particular student cheating on exams" stood silently, the hidden camera in her bag now meaningless. The "sensational" evidence that she intended to exploit was royally announced by Minh and Linh themselves, turning what could have been a libelous scandal into an inspirational story witnessed directly by hundreds of viewers. With nothing left to reveal, no hidden corners left to exploit, she quietly put away the camera and left the auditorium amid the still resounding applause.

Backstage, when Linh and Minh walked in amid everyone's bustling congratulations, Phạm Gia Huy was also present, giving a meaningful smile of appreciation. "The most impressive public debut I've ever witnessed," he said, shaking Minh's hand. "WaveSound Records' contract offer is still open, whenever you're ready, and this time, I'm willing to renegotiate the terms to what you really need, no need to rush into going public, because it looks like you just did it yourself in a way that's more impressive than any media strategy I can think of." Minh laughed, feeling completely relieved for the first time before a job offer. "Thank you. This time, I think I'm ready to sit down and have a serious discussion."

Đỗ Xuân Kiên squeezed into the middle of the crowd and patted Minh on the shoulder, his voice filled with undisguised pride. "You give me goosebumps, kid. Standing on stage like that, there's no fear at all. It's true that my students are different." He laughed loudly, his eyes shining with the sincere warmth of a completely healed friendship.

Bảo Châu hugged Linh, unable to hold back his tears of happiness. "You did it, Linh! I'm so proud of you!"

Linh hugged her best friend tightly, then looked around, seeing all the most important people in her life present here - her mother, her father, although there were many things that needed to be healed, were standing there with sincere proud eyes, Minh's family was now ready to accept his path, and even the friends who had gone through the most difficult journeys with her.

She turned to Minh, holding his hand tightly amidst the countless congratulations still echoing throughout the backstage. "We did it," she whispered, her voice still shaking with emotion.

"We did it," Minh replied, squeezing her hand, his eyes filled with a love and pride that no words could fully describe, ending a turbulent journey with the most worthy victory that the two of them built together, every note, every challenge, every time they fell down and stood up resiliently.
