Chapter 16 — Mistakes Cannot Be Compensated

Updated 10/08/2026 4 min read

Luc Hoai Xuyen stared at the screen, the blue veins on the back of his hand slowly appearing. The deputy director asked: "What about hallway cameras?" In the surveillance video, at 2 hours and 48 minutes, Wen Shuya left my hospital room. At 3:05 a.m., she took the nursing records from the nurse's counter, then chatted a few words with a nurse in the hallway. At 3:22 a.m., she walked past the hospital room door without entering. At 3:37, Tong Dao rushed into the hospital room. From the first time Wen Shuya left until I was discovered, it took nearly 50 minutes. Tong Dao pointed at the screen.

"She said she was called away by her family so she was busy all the time. But at 3:22 a.m., she clearly passed by the door."

The Head of Nursing explained: "The head nurse manages the entire infirmary. Even when she passed by, she didn't go in and couldn't prove that she knew the patient's condition was getting worse."

“So what can she prove if she changes the records?”

“She needs to personally explain.”

Luc Hoai Xuyen suddenly spoke: "Call her here." The deputy director glanced at him.

“Dean Luc, the hospital has suspended her from clinical work, pending the completion of the investigation.”

“I said call her here right now.”

His voice was not loud, but in the meeting room no one dared to speak up. The deputy director told the Complaints Department staff to call. The first call no one answered. The second call was directly disconnected. Luc Hoai Xuyen stood up and was about to walk out. I looked at him.

“The meeting hasn't ended yet.”

He stopped at the door.

“I'll go find her.”

“This is not an operating room, nor are you an investigation team.”

Luc Hoai Xuyen looked back. I pushed the camera seal confirmation to his seat.

“Sign.”

He stared at that piece of paper for a few seconds, then sat down again. After the confirmation procedure was over, I put the copy away. Luc Hoai Xuyen followed me out of the meeting room.

“Gia Hoa, let's talk.”

“The lawyer will talk to you.”

“About the baby.”

My steps stopped. He took out a folded piece of paper from his briefcase. It's my pregnancy ultrasound card.

“The day I came home to look for you, I found it in the drawer of the study room.”

“You rummaged through my things?”

“It's our home.”

“It used to be.”

Luc Hoai Xuyen's throat slid up and down.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Tong Dao, standing next to the elevator, heard it and burst out laughing.

“When she lay in the monitoring room and wanted to talk, I had already gone to take care of Wen Thu Nha.”

“I don't know.”

“There's still a lot of things I don't know.”

Luc Hoai Xuyen didn't even look at Tong Dao, his eyes only focused on me.

“Even if we divorce, the baby belongs to both of us.”

“The pregnant one is me.”

“You have the right to know.”

"You didn't even bother to ask why I was in the emergency room, so what right do you have to claim the right to know?"

The elevator arrives. I walked in, Luc Hoai Xuyen reached out to block the door.

“The day you had surgery, I was originally at the hospital.”

“So what?”

"Thu Nha's mother has chest tightness, I'll go to the recovery room to handle it."

I looked at him.

“You want to tell me, you're very close there?”

His face was pale.

“If I had known a little sooner…”

“If I knew, I would go see her mother first.”

“No way.”

“I've made choices too many times Already."

Luc Hoai Xuyen's hand slowly lowered. Before the elevator door closed, I heard him ask:

“Haven't you ever thought about keeping the baby?”

I did not answer. At 9 p.m., I had just finished taking my medicine when the doorbell rang. Tong Dao looked through the cat's eyes and turned back to lip smack at me. *Luc Hoai Xuyen.* I said: “Don't open.” The doorbell stopped. A few minutes later, there were sounds of arguing outside. Tong Dao looked through cat eyes again.

“Wen Shuya also came.”

I walked to the door.
