Chapter 12 — The Empty Rescuer and the Female President Hide a Will

The house next to the river is in a restricted area after the flood.

I used an old rescue map to find the water entrance. Nam prepares the camera, Vy brings a fake power of attorney to distract the guard.

Quan was locked up on the second floor. He was beaten, but was still conscious.

“Thanh wants the final design,” he said. “He believes I have the key to the third safe.”

“Where is the third safe?” Vy asked.

Quan pointed to the necklace she was wearing. The back has a curved leaf shape, like a box lock.

Vy removed the bracelet. Inside is a small piece of metal.

“My dad gave it to me when I was ten,” she said.

I matched the metal piece to the key. It forms a sign pointing towards the old water filtration plant.

We brought Quan down by rope. The security guard discovered it and fired a warning shot into the sky. Tuan called for support, and I used a rubber boat to push him off the shore.

A whirlpool hit the side of the boat. Army fell. Vy didn't know how to swim but still jumped along. I pulled them both up and heard her gasp:

“I can't lose my brother anymore.”

I wanted to say that Quan was not her biological brother, but remained silent. In times of danger, blood is not as important as the person holding your hand.

The abandoned water filtration plant has an underground control room. The third safe did not contain money, but contained an audio tape from the day my father and Vy's father established the fund.

My father's voice:

“If you two don't accept each other, the fund will be used by someone else to sell the land.”

Father Vy's voice:

“We can't let Thanh know.”

Then there was the sound of arguing and a loud crash.

After listening, Quan's face changed.

“That night my father was pushed off the bridge,” he said. “I saw.”

Vy held his shoulder.

“Who pushed?”

Quan looked at me.

“A person wearing a rescue uniform.”

Tuan stood outside the door, his face pale.

He was the last person to work with my father.

Before I could ask, the factory system turned on the lights. A voice over the loudspeaker said:

“Captain Tuan, do you still keep your promise?”
