Chapter 9 — The Empty Rescuer and the Female President Hide a Will

The third floor has been sealed since the day Vy's father passed away.

Quoc Thanh said it was a chemical storage area and could not enter without a permit. Vy still has her chairman's card, but her authorization system has been deleted.

I used the building salvage diagram to find the old cable. A ventilation door leads down to the basement, just big enough for one person to crawl through. Vy took off her coat and went first.

“The president also crawled through the ventilation duct?” I asked.

"If the president wants to keep his seat, he must know how to go where employees don't want to go."

The storage room is full of leaking water. File boxes are stacked high. I used a flashlight to shine through each label. The second tank is located behind the water pump control panel.

The brass key fits.

There was no money inside. There was only a hard drive, a photo and a letter from my father. He wrote that the Safe River fund has been converted into a trust fund, with the main managers being "my two children, if they can find each other".

Vy read that part and then folded the letter.

“He knows I exist.”

I said nothing. In the photo, my father stands between two women: my mother and Vy's mother. The two did not look at each other, but both held the hand of a child.

The hard drive contains the fund ledger and land allocation table. The riverfront area cannot be sold because part of it belongs to a trust fund.

The sound of the pump suddenly stopped. Water poured down from the ceiling.

"Go out!" Vy shouted.

I strapped the hard drive to my chest and pulled her through the hallway. The ventilation door is locked from above. We were trapped under the rising water level.

Vy coughed.

“I don't know how to swim.”

“Then stick with me.”

I used a knife to break the net, opening it wide enough. Nam and Tuan pulled us up by rope.

Outside the lobby, Quoc Thanh stood waiting. He looked at the hard drive in my hand.

“You think a ledger can change a land sale contract?”

I wiped the water off my face.

“No. But it changes who has the authority to sign.”

Vy stood next to me, placing her hand on my shoulder.

“We will test.”

Thanh burst out laughing. He did not know that tomorrow the whole city would know that the two sisters were standing together.
