Chapter 3
Chapter 3 — The Empty Rescuer and the Female President Hide a Will
Quoc Thanh called me a traitor's daughter.
He doesn't need to raise his voice. Just that sentence was enough to make the staff outside the door turn to look.
“Your father took money from Thien Ha,” Thanh said. “You came here to ask for more?”
I placed the transaction copy on the table.
“I came to ask why the rescue fund money was transferred to your company.”
Thanh burst out laughing.
"You don't understand business. An investment is not a theft."
Tuong Vy interrupted:
“You have no right to use my name to call her.”
“I'm still the president on paper.”
The air in the room became cold. I realized that Vy is not the one controlling the corporation even though she sits in the highest position.
Thanh gave me a file and said that if I wanted to keep the fund, I had to prove that my father did not embezzle. He promised to withdraw the complaint and suspend me if I handed over the USB.
I laugh.
“You are negotiating with something that does not belong to you.”
Thanh stopped by:
"The riverside residential area will be cleared. Your rescue team will no longer have a place to work. You will lose your job, your mother will lose her house. Don't think a USB can save anyone."
I put the file back.
“Let's see if you can get it.”
Leaving the headquarters, I saw Bao Nam standing under the awning. He used to be a reporter, now works as a freelance investigator. He heard the entire meeting through someone on the council.
“You follow me?”
"I followed the money. You happened to be standing right in the middle."
Nam gave me a photo of red stakes planted along the riverbank. Thien Ha signed a land survey contract before the flood.
“They knew the flood was coming?”
“Or they know the embankment will collapse.”
That night, team leader Tuan called to say my suspension had been upgraded to dismissal. Reason: violating rescue procedures and losing the victim's property.
The asset they said was a metal box.
I have never spoken about it. So who is the reporter?
Tuong Vy texted an address, no explanation. I arrived at an underground parking lot. She stood next to the car, taking off her black gloves.
“If you want to keep the USB, don't go alone.”
“Are you helping me or monitoring me?”
"Both. Because the person who took the box knew your father left something else behind."
