Chapter 20 — The Empty Rescuer and the Female President Hide a Will

The old tunnel connects to the river wharf, but the water is already chest deep.

I wore a life jacket and went ahead. Vy didn't know how to swim but still followed, this time without me telling her to hold on to the rope. Nam holds the camera, Quan leads the way.

We found Thanh on a concrete platform, next to a small safe.

“Don't go any further,” he said. “One more step and the water will sweep the safe down.”

I looked at the exhaust valve. Thanh opened water from underground sewers to erase traces and create floods.

“You can't take the safe out.”

“I just need you to get the key.”

Vy stepped up.

"Uncle said your father didn't want you two to know each other. Did he really want to push you into the water?"

Thanh laughed.

"Your father is too soft. I'm just helping him decide."

The troops rushed forward, but the concrete floor slid. I grabbed his hand, Vy held the rope. Thanh lost his balance and fell into the water.

I jumped in and pulled him onto the float. He panicked and punched my arm.

“What did you save me for?”

“So you can answer while you're still alive.”

Nam filmed Thanh's entire statement, including admitting that he had exchanged steel and forced Tuan.

The police arrested him as soon as he got ashore.

The safe was pulled up. Inside is the fund contract and a handwritten will of my father, added after Vy's father passed away.

He wrote:

"If Thanh is exposed, the fund must be transferred to the rescuer and the business operator to sign together. One person understands the water flow, one person understands the cash flow."

Vy read it, then gave me the pen.

“Dad wants us to work together.”

“Dad didn't know we would argue.”

“So we are family.”

We signed the fund receipt minutes in the presence of a lawyer.

Khang called to say my mother was waiting at the hospital. She wants to meet Vy.

When Vy walked in, my mother held her hand.

“I'm sorry.”

Vy nodded, not saying that she was also angry.

Outside, the rain started again. The embankment has not been repaired yet, but for the first time in many years, the fund has a real person in its name.
