Chapter 8 — The Empty Rescuer and the Female President Hide a Will

We found the engineer at the abandoned hospital.

Nam followed the receipt for medicine bought in cash, and Tuan remembered an old medical station across the river. Inside, a thin man lay next to the generator. He is Le Minh Quan, an embankment engineer and also Vy's younger brother according to Thanh.

Quan looked at me first.

“You opened the box?”

"Already."

“So they know I'm alive.”

Vy stepped up. Quan bowed his head.

“You know me?”

"Since the day you were born. But uncle said father wanted you gone."

Quan laughed bitterly.

"I'm not your biological brother. I'm the person your father adopted as a cover for the contract."

He gave us a design of the embankment. The steel bars in the file were replaced with thinner ones, and the difference was transferred to Thanh Tin.

“I sent this copy to your father,” Quan said. "He said we have to keep the people first, then fight disputes. But Thanh asked someone to delete the data."

I asked why he gave the box to the child.

"Because I know I'll be caught. I need someone outside the cartel to receive it."

At that moment, the sound of a car stopping outside the yard. Quan pulled us into the room under the stairs. Three people walked in and looked for each hospital bed.

Vy took out her phone and texted Nam the location. I looked at the generator and remembered the exhaust line. I turned off the light and opened the auxiliary valve. Smoke poured out, forcing the group to run outside.

Tuan and the police rushed in. One person was arrested, two people ran away.

Quan was taken to witness protection. Before leaving, he told Vy:

“My father didn't want us to know each other because he was afraid Thanh would use one against the other.”

Vy did not reply. She looked at me, for the first time her eyes were no longer those of a female president.

“Do you want to get tested?”

“To prove what?”

“To know we have rights in the will.”

I looked at the muddy box.

“I want to know in advance whether we can be on the same side or not.”

The troops were sent away. Nam's phone vibrates. A text message from an unknown number reported the location of the second safe: Thien Ha's storage room, third floor.
