Chapter 26
Chapter 26 — The Empty Rescuer and the Female President Hide a Will
Thien Ha changed the name of the fund to Safe River, keeping the names of my father and Vy's father.
I don't take personal shares. Vy transferred part of the voting rights to the fund, and Ms. Nhu gave the foreign account to the independent board.
Quoc Thanh went to court to plead guilty partly, but still said he only saved the corporation from bankruptcy.
I was called as a witness. The lawyer asked me if I had any enmity with him.
"Sometimes yes. But I came here to say what he did, not how I feel."
Quoc Thanh looked at me.
“You think your father would be proud?”
"I don't know. But he would want me to tell the truth."
Duyen declares the entire insurance contract. Tuan talked about pressure. Hung asked for a reduced sentence because he handed over his account.
The verdict determined that Quoc Thanh had embezzled, destroyed works and coerced witnesses. He was forced to return assets to the fund.
There is no scene of him kneeling down and apologizing. Only one man left the court under flash lights, no longer authorized to sign.
Vy asked me if I felt relieved.
“I think there's more that needs to be done.”
The resettlement area needs schools, medical stations and rescue stations. The fund cannot just repair the embankment.
Khang proposed opening a kitchen to provide vocational training for people. I don't call it charity; he calls it work.
Nam set up a flood data platform to get information from people. The military built cheap embankment sensors that allowed anyone to see.
Vy still runs Thien Ha, but each project must go through a council with resident representatives.
A reporter asked her if she was still the cold female president.
Vy replied:
"Coldness is a form of saving emotions. I'm learning how to use emotions in the right place."
When I heard that sentence, I saw that my sister had changed.
The night of the opening of the new lifeboat station, we dropped the brass key into the display case. Don't lock the safe anymore, just to remind everyone that the secret used to sink the whole neighborhood.
Hanh's mother stood between the two sisters, taking a photo together for the first time.
The photo is not perfect. But no one is cut out of the frame.
